Oksana Pavlova: the Best Samples of Selection and Genetics were Presented at the Joint Stand of the Ministry of Science

There at the largest venue of the exhibition’s partner, the Ministry of Science and Education, 15 leading scientific and educational institutions of Russia are represented at once, including the Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden, IREA (Institute of Chemical Reagents and Super Pure Chemicals) under the Kurchatov Institute Research Center, the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Production (VNIISSOK), VILAR (All-Russian Scientific and Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants), the Mendeleevsky Institute, All-Russian Selection and Technological Institute of Horticulture and Nursery, MSTU STANKIN (Stankin Moscow State Technological University) and others. Oksana Pavlova, a researcher at the Federal Research Center for Vegetable Production conducted for us a fascinating tour around the joint stand.

“For the second year in a row, we have participated in Flowers&City exhibition under the cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. This year is anniversary for VDNH (the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy) – 80 years. So, two significant anniversaries – the 150th anniversary of Mendeleev Periodic Table of Elements and the 120th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding biologist and breeder N.V. Tsitsin were chosen for the theme of our exposition under the name Garden of Science. In memory of these dates, a conference was also held during the exhibition, where our leading biologists, breeders, chemists, genetics and physicians made presentations on the achievements in breeding, on the work to preserve biological diversity, new varieties and agricultural technology of both traditional plants and new ones, which only gain popularity as the vegetable crops, ornamental and medicinal plants; as well as on the application of scientific work results in urbanization conditions.

Also, for the first time this year, we made a section dedicated to phytotherapy as one of the ways to preserve the citizen's health. Accordingly, our exposition reflected all aspects of research and scientific research.

We showed In an original way the relationship of some macro and micro elements and wildlife: all the useful elements from Mendeleev Table are presented in vegetables and fruits grown by us. Visitors to the exhibition were able to get acquainted at our stand with a real pantry of elements and vitamins that plants contain.
A separate block was dedicated to Nikolai Tsitsin, the greatest geneticist and breeder, author of many varieties of wheat.

What did your institute present at the exhibition?

At the exhibition we presented novelties that have already won the love and trust of both amateur gardeners and professionals – vegetable, gingerbread and flower cultures.

We also designed the Pharmaceutical Garden where our varieties of ornamental cabbage Estafeta (Relay Race), hyssop pink Rodnik zdorovya (Spring of Health) and curly parsley Krasotka (Pretty Woman) literally won the hearts of all amateur gardeners.

The Federal Research Center for Vegetable Production where I work will be 100 years old in 2020. A few years ago there a merger took place: 8 branches were joined to us, now it is the largest organization for vegetable growing, plant breeding and seed production in Russia. Over the entire period, we have created more than 1,500 varieties and heterotic hybrids. There in our organization, more than 800 people work – leading breeders, technologists, genetics who work on various varieties and hybrids of vegetable, gingerbread, melon and flower crops. We perform a full cycle of works from theory to seed in our country’s fields.

We have our own workshop for finalization, pelleting and coating seeds in the Odintsovo district. In the market we present seeds packaged in bags of different capacities with our company’s logo.

In addition, we work closely with a whole network of farmers across the country. Our institute is actively engaged in the import substitution program. A month ago, in the Tver region, we visited to sign a contract for a project of a greenhouse complex in the single-industry town of Kuvshinovo, where our black tomato Zemba, a completely unique cocktail variety of the Moscow region selection, belonging to the latest varieties of the new generation, will be grown. The ceremonial laying of the first stone of the Kuvshinovsky greenhouse complex already took place, the first phase of which will cover 3 hectares and a capacity of 3 thousand tons of vegetables per year in the third quarter of 2020.

How and where do you find farmers for your test planting?

Our branches are located thorough this country from Vladivostok to the South of Russia – Stavropol, Western Siberia, Voronezh, etc. A network of already proven farmers grow seeds of the first reproduction for us, but vegetable growing is not far behind – in the Belgorod region, farmers specialize in growing pumpkins and zucchini for baby food from the seeds of our varieties. In the Stavropol Krai, the very same Bonduelle peas are grown from our seeds.

Before concluding a contract with the farm, we, of course, analyze the climatic and soil conditions, the specialization of the farm itself, and then, throughout the entire period of organogenesis, our employees and the marketing and commercial service control the farmers and give their recommendations.

By the way, our experts also gave consultations and invited for cooperation at the exhibition Flowers& City. In general, the exhibition is an excellent occasion to meet both with your long-standing partners and meet new ones.
